More than 200 students will know the problems of crayfish during an exchange day between Green Highschools of Girona, Baix Empordà and Pla de l’Estany

The meeting will take place in Girona and is coordinated by TOSCA Serveis Ambientals d’Educació i Turisme, the Consorci de l’Estany and the Consorci del Ter, under the LIFE Potamo Fauna

On 23 and 27 May will take place at Hortes de Santa Eugènia de Girona an exchange day between several highschools of Girona, Baix Empordà and the Pla de l’Estany, as part of the Green Schools program of Generalitat de Catalunya. There will be 206 students along the two days. The action that will be carried out is focused on understanding the problem and removing exotic crayfish. In particular it will be a day of voluntary environmental control of Louisiana Crayfish (Procambarus clarkii). The event is coordinated by TOSCA (under the advice of the Green Schools Program of the Girona) and will direct involve between 5 and 8 technical responsables of the LIFE Potamo Fauna "Conservation of river fauna of Community interest in the Natura 2000 network sites of the Ter, Fluvià and Muga river basins", who will coordinate the actions during the morning. It has the support of the Girona City Council and the Regional Council of Girona (Diputació de Girona).

The Hortes of Santa Eugènia is an area severely affected by the presence of Louisiana Crayfish and place within the scope of the LIFE project Potamo Fauna. Specifically, crayfish will be captured along the water distribution channels for the orchards, as well as the ponds.

On Monday, May 23 students from three highschools in Girona will participate in the activity: Santa Eugènia, Santiago Sobrequés and Jaume Vicens Vives. And on May 27 it will be the turn of students from the Josep Brugulat from Banyoles, Palafrugell from Baix Empordà, Martí Carreras from Palafrugell and Salvador Espriu from Salt.

Previously, with the aim of the participating students have knowledge of the problem of invasive alien species, understand and become aware of the actions carried out in the Hortes de Santa Eugènia, the highschools will have the possibility of holding the exhibition about project LIFE Potamo Fauna. Three of these centers will expose and make the visits during the month of May. Santiago Sobrequés, Salvador Espriu and Santa Eugènia.

LIFE Potamo Fauna has an overall budget of 1.9 million Euros, 50% funded by the European Union. Between 2014 and 2017 will work in 11 Natura 2000 areas in the province of Girona recovering and preserving various endangered species in the long term. It carries out population reinforcements, and improvements of habitats of species such as the white-footed crayfish, or more molluscs, fish, amphibians and terrapins.

The Consorci de l’Estany acts as a coordinating beneficiary and associated beneficiaries are Consorci del Ter, Generalitat de Catalunya throught Departament de Territori i Sostenibilitat, Forestal Catalana SA, the Amics de la Tortuga de l’Albera and the Universidad del País Vasco-Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea. Cofinanciators are the Ajuntament de Banyoles and the Ajuntament de Porqueres, the Diputació de Girona, Aigües de Banyoles, SAU and the Consorci Esportiu de l’Estany de Banyoles.
